Full answer and how we checked it
Yes, nonprofits can apply for Home Depot Foundation (THDF) grants, but only 2 programs were taking applications on November 6, 2026. Veteran Housing Grants, for nonprofit housing developers, typically pay $100,000 to $500,000 for construction of permanent supportive housing for veterans, and the next proposal due date is November 20, 2026. Path to Pro Education Grants pay up to $10,000 in Home Depot gift cards to schools, colleges and nonprofits that already run construction trades training; applications are open, with awards starting February 2027. Disaster relief and most veteran giving go to partners the Foundation picks.
Who this is for: If you run a veteran housing nonprofit, a skilled trades program, a community college or a community group and searched for Home Depot Foundation grants, this guide covers what's open, how much each program pays, who actually received money on the Foundation's latest tax return, and where to go when Home Depot isn't a fit. Grantsights isn't affiliated with The Home Depot or its Foundation.
Data note: Program rules, amounts and dates come from The Home Depot Foundation's own pages on corporate.homedepot.com (homedepotfoundation.org redirects there) and the Retool Your School site, all checked November 6, 2026. The Foundation is a public charity, so it files Form 990, not a 990-PF, and isn't in Grantsights' 990-PF dataset. Grant numbers come from Grantsights analysis of the Foundation's Form 990 Schedule I for the year February 1, 2024 to January 31, 2025 (EIN 58-2491657, read on ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer November 6, 2026). That analysis leaves out $18,713,521 paid to individuals: 11,629 Homer Fund hardship grants to Home Depot employees ($17,058,521) and 662 scholarships for employees' children ($1,655,000), which no organization can apply for. It also leaves out one $151,628 payment to CyberGrants SPV, a giving platform whose final recipients the filing doesn't list. Schedule I itemizes only grants over $5,000.

Home Depot Foundation grants open on November 6, 2026
Grantsights checked 7 Home Depot routes on November 6, 2026. Two take applications from organizations now, one is a closed annual contest for colleges, and the rest are partner-only or employee-only.
| Home Depot program | Pays for | Eligible applicants | Amount on the funder's page | Status, November 6, 2026 | Program page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Homer Fund | Hardship grants and scholarships | Home Depot employees and their children only | Not a grant for organizations | Employee-only | Form 990, Schedule I Part III |
Recently closed: Retool Your School 2026 (applications closed June 7, 2026; recipients announced). The Southern California Path to Pro page's last posted window ran November 1 to December 15, 2025.
Our reading: if you develop veteran housing, the November 20 date matters more than anything else in this guide. If you run a trades program, the National Path to Pro application is open and cheap to submit. Almost everyone else searching "Home Depot grants" will find no open door, and the honest move is to use the alternatives below.

How much the Home Depot Foundation gives, and who gets it
The Foundation reported $89,639,155 in grants on its Form 990 for the year ending January 31, 2025. Per the 2024 Form 990, Part IX, that splits into $70,177,870 to U.S. organizations, $18,713,521 to individuals and $747,764 to foreign recipients. Total revenue was $110,964,312. The return was submitted December 8, 2025; no newer return was available on ProPublica when Grantsights checked.
Grantsights analysis of the Foundation's Form 990 Schedule I, Part II, found 169 itemized grants to organizations totaling $69,279,594: $63,537,084 in cash and $5,742,510 in Home Depot gift cards, which 37 grants included. The median grant was $100,000. Recipients sat in 25 states and Washington, D.C. The filing gives the same purpose line, "To assist local charities," for every grant, so it doesn't say which program paid each one.
| Grant size (cash plus gift cards) | Grants | Total | Share of dollars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $10,000 | 11 | $83,500 | 0.1% |
| $10,000 to $24,999 | 45 | $510,000 | 0.7% |
| $25,000 to $99,999 | 23 | $990,210 | 1.4% |
| $100,000 to $499,999 | 48 | $10,582,822 | 15.3% |
| $500,000 to $999,999 | 20 | $13,108,000 | 18.9% |
| $1,000,000 and up | 22 | $44,005,062 | 63.5% |
| All itemized grants | 169 | $69,279,594 | 100% |
The 10 largest recipients took 42.4% of the dollars:
| Recipient (filing address) | Cash | Gift cards | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home Builders Institute (Washington, D.C.) | $5,711,462 | $235,000 | $5,946,462 |
| Habitat for Humanity International (Americus, Ga.) | $2,925,000 | $400,000 | $3,325,000 |
| Semper Fi & America's Fund (Oceanside, Calif.) | $2,650,000 | $350,000 | $3,000,000 |
| Meals on Wheels America (Arlington, Va.) | $2,180,000 | $600,000 | $2,780,000 |
| Tunnel to Towers Foundation (Staten Island, N.Y.) | $2,160,000 | $600,000 | $2,760,000 |
| Volunteers of America, national office (Alexandria, Va.) | $2,505,500 | $168,000 | $2,673,500 |
| Operation Homefront (San Antonio) | $2,404,000 | $0 | $2,404,000 |
| Charities Aid Foundation America (Alexandria, Va.) | $2,384,900 | $0 | $2,384,900 |
| Team Rubicon (Los Angeles) | $1,905,000 | $200,000 | $2,105,000 |
| Community Solutions International (New York) | $2,030,000 | $0 | $2,030,000 |
Charities Aid Foundation America re-grants donations to other charities, and the filing doesn't say where this money went. Most of the other names appear on the Foundation's own partner lists: Home Builders Institute runs Path to Pro training, and Semper Fi & America's Fund, Tunnel to Towers, Operation Homefront and Community Solutions are named in its October 22, 2026 veteran announcement.
Georgia dominates the list. 92 of the 169 grants (54%) went to Georgia addresses, worth $21,914,522, and 77 went to Atlanta addresses. The Foundation is based in Atlanta. Of the Georgia grants, 42 were $25,000 or less, such as $10,000 each to Agnes Scott College and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Outside Georgia, the next states by dollars were D.C. (8 grants, $9,721,462), Virginia (10, $9,223,400), California (12, $8,776,010) and New York (7, $5,365,000). Those figures follow each charity's mailing address, so national groups based near Washington pull dollars there that are spent elsewhere.
Veteran Housing Grants: the main door for nonprofits
The Veteran Housing Grants page says awards typically range from $100,000 to $500,000 for new construction or rehabilitation of permanent supportive housing for veterans. According to the Home Depot Foundation's Serving Veterans page, it has invested more than $650 million in veteran causes and improved more than 70,000 veteran homes and facilities since 2011. On October 22, 2026, it raised its commitment to $1 billion in veteran causes by 2032.
The eligibility rules, as posted November 6, 2026:
| Rule | What the program page requires |
|---|---|
| Organization | 501(c)(3) in good standing with the IRS for at least 5 years |
| Size | Operating budget of at least $300,000 and audited financials for the past 3 years |
| Track record | Has developed veteran housing and currently owns or manages veteran-specific housing |
| Ownership | 15+ year ownership stake in the development |
| Local system | Part of the Continuum of Care or a local collaboration to end homelessness |
| What's paid | Hard construction costs only; no furnishings, rental subsidies or tenant services |
| Share of cost | Foundation money must be less than 50% of total development cost |
| Funding lined up | 75% of sources identified at proposal; construction starts within 12 months |
| Who's housed | Honorably discharged veterans at or below 80% of area median income; at least 20% of units reserved for veterans |
| Proof | A binding third-party agreement keeping units for veterans for 15 years, such as project-based HUD-VASH, a deed restriction or zoning requirement. An MOU doesn't count |
| Services | Supportive services must be provided |
Where: The page says grants go throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, rural areas will be considered, but priority goes to cities over 300,000 people, with a focus on Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Houston, Detroit, San Diego, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta and Tampa.
2027 funding cycle calendar (posted on the program page):
| Cycle | Proposal due | Final determinations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | November 20, 2026 | April 2027 |
| 2 | March 19, 2027 | August 2027 |
| 3 | July 2, 2027 | December 2027 |
Proposals are accepted year-round; anything submitted after a due date is queued for the next cycle. Staff contact applicants no later than 45 days after the due date.
Who wins these grants? The filing doesn't label grants by program, but several recipients look like the developers this page describes, with amounts inside the published range. One nonprofit in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Soldier On, received $500,000; Montachusett Veterans Outreach Center in Gardner, Mass., and Cordon Housing in Pewaukee, Wis., also received $500,000 each. Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans received $400,000, Emerald Development & Economic Network in Cleveland received $300,000, and Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation in Ventura, Calif., and Native American Connections in Phoenix received $200,000 each. None of them is in a priority city, which suggests the city list is a preference, not a wall.
Path to Pro Education Grants for trades programs
Path to Pro Education Grants pay up to $10,000 in Home Depot gift cards for tools, products, equipment and new or remodeled training spaces. According to the Path to Pro Education Grants National program page, applications are being accepted now, but new awards won't be made until February 2027; applications already submitted stay under consideration, so there's no need to reapply unless the Path to Pro team asks.
Eligibility, from the National page checked November 6, 2026:
- An accredited K-12 school, accredited community or technical college, or 501(c)(3), based in the U.S., with an existing construction skilled trades program. Carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and construction management get emphasis.
- A current operating budget of at least $300,000 and audited financial statements for the past 3 years (schools may present exemption documentation).
- At least 3 years old; one request per organization; funds used for program expenses.
- Not eligible: scholarships or tuition, events, programs supporting only 4-year degrees, for-profit businesses, sports teams, labor or fraternal groups, endowments, and religious organizations unless the program is nonsectarian and has a separate 501(c)(3).
The Southern California version has the same rules for programs within 60 miles of Los Angeles, but its page still listed windows ending December 15, 2025 when Grantsights checked. Email the address on that page before you write a Southern California application.
The bigger Path to Pro money goes to partners. The program page names Home Builders Institute, Construction Ready and SkillPointe Foundation; on the Form 990 they received $5,946,462, $225,000 and $925,000. The page says the Foundation's partnerships have certified more than 70,000 participants since 2018, and the Foundation's main page lists a $50 million pledge to trades training.
Retool Your School for colleges
Retool Your School is a Home Depot company program, listed on the Foundation's Grants page, that has put more than $18 million into campus improvements since 2009, according to its 2026 program page. In 2026 it offered 10 Campus Improvement Grants valued at $200,000 each and 14 Innovation Lounge Grants valued at $75,000 each.
Per the Retool Your School FAQ, applicants must be accredited 4-year or 2-year institutions with current enrollment under 16,000 and an endowment under $500 million. Only an employee using a school email address may apply, one application per school per year, and a non-employee application removes the school for the year. There's no voting, and the program doesn't accept unsolicited requests. Innovation Lounge grants cover a space under 1,000 square feet and can't be won twice.
The 2026 window ran May 11 to June 7, 2026, and the 2026 recipients have been announced. Home Depot's own Retool Your School page describes the program as shaping the future of HBCUs, even though the FAQ's written eligibility rules don't mention HBCU status. If you're at an HBCU, our HBCU grants guide lists programs with open cycles.
Disaster relief, Team Depot and the programs you can't apply to
The Foundation says it committed nearly $9 million in 2025 to disaster preparedness, response and long-term recovery. Its Disaster Relief page names Team Rubicon, Convoy of Hope, Operation Blessing, American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen as partners. On the Form 990, Team Rubicon received $2,105,000, Operation Blessing $1,100,000, Convoy of Hope $690,000, World Central Kitchen $670,000 and the American National Red Cross $640,000. There's no application. Local groups reach this money by working with those partners after a disaster.
Team Depot is Home Depot's associate volunteer force. Its 2026 Celebration of Service ran September 8 to November 20, 2026, with veteran housing projects in all 50 states plus Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, run with hundreds of nonprofits. It's volunteer labor organized through partners, not a grant program.
The Homer Fund is the largest single line on the return after organizational grants. Per the 2024 Form 990, Schedule I Part III, it paid $17,058,521 in hardship grants to 11,629 Home Depot employees and $1,655,000 in scholarships to 662 employees' children. It isn't open to outside organizations, which is why this guide's analysis leaves it out.
Community Impact Grants, the older gift card program for volunteer projects, no longer appears on the Foundation's Grants page. The old page address returned an access-denied (403) error on November 6, 2026.
What the Home Depot Foundation's Grant Pages Don't Tell You
Grantsights checked the Foundation's program pages against its Form 990 and its 2026 newsroom posts. 6 things are easy to miss:
Most of the money isn't up for application. Of the $69.3 million itemized to organizations, 63.5% went in 22 grants of $1 million or more, mostly to national partners the Foundation names on its own pages. The open programs are real, but they're the smaller side of the budget. Don't underestimate how much of "Home Depot Foundation grants" is relationship money.
The veteran housing bar is high. Five years of IRS good standing, a $300,000 budget, 3 years of audits, existing veteran housing you own or manage, a 15-year ownership stake and a binding 15-year veteran set-aside rule out most small nonprofits and most first-time developers. A common mistake is submitting with an MOU from a housing authority; the FAQ says an MOU won't be accepted.
The grant can't be most of your budget. The Foundation's money must be less than 50% of total development cost, and 75% of sources must be identified when you submit. For a $4 million project, even a $500,000 award is 12.5%. Treat it as gap money in a capital stack, not the anchor.
Gift cards aren't cash. Path to Pro Education Grants are paid entirely in Home Depot gift cards, and 37 of the 169 itemized grants on the Form 990 included gift cards. If your program needs instructor pay or credentials, this grant won't cover it.
Pages lag the news. The Serving Veterans page and the September 8 Celebration of Service post still say $750 million by 2030, while the October 22 announcement says $1 billion by 2032. The Southern California Path to Pro page still shows 2025 windows. The Retool Your School FAQ says recipients are announced July 27 in one answer and September in another. Check the date on whatever page you're reading.
Third-party listings are a red flag. Grant databases still list Community Impact Grants with rolling deadlines. The Foundation's Grants page doesn't list that program, and the old address returned an error. Apply only through links on corporate.homedepot.com or retoolyourschool.com.
How to apply for a Home Depot Foundation grant, step by step
There are 3 application routes an organization can use, and 2 of them run through the same portal. Here's the process from the program pages checked November 6, 2026.
Veteran Housing Grants
- Check the hard rules first. Use the eligibility table above. If you can't show a binding 15-year veteran set-aside or 3 years of audits, stop here.
- Line up your capital stack. Identify at least 75% of funding sources and confirm construction can start within 12 months.
- Open the portal. Go to foundation.homedepot.com (opens in a new tab), the grant platform linked from the program page. New applicants select Register; past applicants use Forgot Password with the email on their earlier application.
- Pick the right cycle. Under New Applications, choose Start a New Application and select the Veteran Housing Grant for the cycle you want. Cycle 1 proposals are due November 20, 2026.
- Expect a staged review. Staff respond within 45 days of the due date. If you advance, you get a link to the full application, then a third-party review of your finances, business practices and project, which may include interviews, then a board review.
- Questions go to THDF_VHG@homedepot.com, the address on the program page.
Path to Pro Education Grants
- Confirm your trades program, accreditation or 501(c)(3) status, $300,000 budget and audits.
- Log in or register at the same portal, choose Start a New Application, then Apply Now on the "Path to Pro Education Grant" line.
- Budget for tools, equipment or space only, at or under $10,000.
- Wait for the February 2027 review; don't submit twice. Questions go to Education_Grants@HomeDepot.com.
Retool Your School: Watch retoolyourschool.com (opens in a new tab) for 2027 dates. A school employee applies with a school email during the window; the 2026 window was 4 weeks long.
What to apply for instead
At least 4 federal programs fund the same veteran housing and trades work, and they take applications on published schedules. Use them alongside, or instead of, a Home Depot proposal.
For veteran housing developers. According to VA, the HUD-VASH program (opens in a new tab) combines a HUD Housing Choice Voucher with VA case management and supportive services. Project-based HUD-VASH is one of the binding agreements the Foundation accepts as proof of the 15-year set-aside, so it often has to come first. VA's Grant and Per Diem program (opens in a new tab) funds community-based organizations that run transitional supportive housing, and its Supportive Services for Veteran Families (opens in a new tab) grants pay for housing stability services that can cover the tenant services the Foundation won't. Our guides on grants for homeless veterans, VA grants for veteran organizations and grants for veterans organizations cover the cycles. For the housing side, see grants for affordable housing and best grants for affordable housing nonprofits in 2026.
For trades training programs. According to DOL's Registered Apprenticeship page (opens in a new tab), a registered program pairs paid work with a mentor, classroom instruction and a nationally recognized credential, approved by the Department of Labor or a state apprenticeship agency. Pre-apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship partnerships fund instructor time that gift cards can't. See grants for workforce training, best grants for workforce development nonprofits in 2026 and, for schools, the Perkins CTE grants guide.
For disaster recovery groups. The disaster relief nonprofit grants guide lists programs with open applications, which matters because Home Depot's disaster money flows through national partners.
Other company and foundation money. Start with corporate grants for nonprofits for other company programs, and your community foundation for local projects. Grantsights groups private foundations by cause and state using their own 990-PF filings, and the human services funder list shows a free preview for your state. The grant search covers open public programs.
How Grantsights Checked This Guide
Grantsights compared 11 sources on November 6, 2026 and confirmed each status, amount and rule on the funder's own page or filing.

| What Schedule I covers | IRS: About Schedule I (Form 990) (opens in a new tab) | Grants to domestic organizations, governments and individuals |
According to IRS guidance on Schedule I (opens in a new tab), organizations that file Form 990 use it to report grants made during the tax year to domestic organizations, governments and individuals. That's why the Homer Fund's employee payments sit on the same schedule as the nonprofit grants, and why this guide separates them.

Does Home Depot still offer Community Impact Grants?
Not as far as Grantsights could confirm. On November 6, 2026, the Foundation's Grants page listed only Veteran Housing Grants, Retool Your School and Path to Pro Grants, and the old Community Impact Grants page address returned an access-denied (403) error. Grant listings that still show a rolling Community Impact deadline are out of date.
Can individuals or veterans get a Home Depot Foundation grant?
No. Every grant program on the Foundation's pages is for organizations. The Veteran Housing Grants FAQ says single-home construction or repair requests don't qualify and points veterans to partners the Foundation already funds. The Homer Fund hardship grants and scholarships on its Form 990 are only for Home Depot employees and their children.
