NIH T32 Awards: Award History FY2022 to FY2026
Quick Answer: NIH funded 1,705 T32 training grants in FY2026, worth $666.0 million, according to a Grantsights pull of NIH RePORTER on November 2, 2026.
Full answer and how we checked it
Of those, 113 were new and 274 were competing renewals. The median T32 was $344,033 for the year. NIGMS funded 418 of them, about 25%. RePORTER amounts don't show how many trainees a program supports.
This guide is for: Training program directors, graduate program chairs, and research offices who want the real NIH T32 award history: how many training grants NIH funds, what they're worth, which institutes pay for them, and which schools hold the most, before the January 25, 2027 due date.
Data note: Grantsights pulled the NIH RePORTER API (opens in a new tab) on November 2, 2026 for activity code T32, fiscal years 2022 through 2026, at about one request per second. That returned 8,758 project-year records. Each record is one T32 program's funding for one fiscal year, so a 5-year grant appears up to 5 times across the years. "New" means project numbers starting with "1" and "renewal" means "2". Amounts are RePORTER's
award_amount, the total cost for that fiscal year. FY2026 records run through award notices dated September 18, 2026, and RePORTER may still add some. No fiscal year came near the API's 15,000-record paging limit, so no year needed splitting, and the fetched rows matched RePORTER's total for every year.

According to the NIH T32 activity code page (opens in a new tab), the T32 is meant "to enable institutions to make National Research Service Awards to individuals selected by them." The institution, not NIH, picks the trainees. NIH funds the program.
Grantsights analysis of 8,758 T32 records from FY2022 through FY2026 shows a large program that's shrinking slowly. The count fell from 1,809 in FY2023 to 1,705 in FY2026, about 6%, while NIGMS grew its share and NIDDK and NIAID cut theirs.
T32 Awards By Fiscal Year, FY2022 To FY2026
NIH RePORTER shows 1,705 T32 awards with FY2026 funding, 104 fewer than the 1,809 in FY2023, according to the November 2, 2026 Grantsights pull.
| Fiscal year | T32 awards funded | New (type 1) | Renewals (type 2) | Median award | Middle half of awards | Total T32 dollars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY2022 | 1,802 | 124 | 189 | $325,829 | $224,369 to $466,813 | $677.6M |
| FY2023 | 1,809 | 136 | 215 | $334,845 | $229,759 to $480,429 | $696.3M |
| FY2024 | 1,760 | 116 | 205 | $354,563 | $235,642 to $503,930 | $706.9M |
| FY2025 | 1,682 | 108 | 240 | $361,310 | $252,706 to $497,472 | $687.9M |
| FY2026 | 1,705 | 113 | 274 | $344,033 | $228,719 to $472,671 | $666.0M |
Most of each year's count is non-competing continuations (type 5), 1,283 in FY2026. Revisions and supplements (type 3) fell from 99 in FY2022 to 32 in FY2026.
New T32 programs are smaller than established ones. In FY2026, the median new award was $284,006, with the middle half from $191,987 to $405,911, while the median renewal was $398,173. Larger renewals are consistent with established programs supporting more trainees than new ones, though RePORTER can't confirm the slot counts behind either number.
Total dollars peaked at $706.9 million in FY2024 and fell to $666.0 million in FY2026, a 6% drop, as the number of funded programs fell from 1,760 to 1,705.

How Far A T32 Dollar Goes: Slots Aren't In RePORTER
NIH set the FY2026 predoctoral stipend at $29,364 a year, according to NOT-OD-26-044 (opens in a new tab), released March 18, 2026.
RePORTER doesn't list appointments or slots, so a T32's dollar amount is the only public clue to its size. The FY2026 rates from NOT-OD-26-044 and the 8% indirect rate in PA-25-168 (opens in a new tab) show what goes into it:
| Cost per full-time trainee, FY2026 | Predoctoral | Postdoctoral (0 years experience) |
|---|---|---|
| Stipend | $29,364 | $63,480 |
| Training-related expenses | $4,750 | $12,400 |
| Tuition and fees | 60% of actual, up to $16,000 | Up to $4,500 (or $16,000 in a degree program) |
| Indirect costs | 8% of modified total direct costs, excluding tuition | Same |
Grantsights calculated a rough per-slot cost from those rates. A predoctoral slot with the full $16,000 tuition comes to about $52,800 a year including indirect costs ($29,364 plus $4,750 plus $16,000, plus 8% of $34,114). At that rate, the FY2026 median award of $344,033 would cover about 6 or 7 predoctoral slots. A postdoctoral slot at the entry stipend, with no tuition, costs about $82,000 ($63,480 plus $12,400, plus 8%), so the same money would cover about 4 postdocs.
That's an estimate, not a count. Real programs mix pre- and postdocs, pay postdoc stipends at higher experience levels, and pay tuition below the cap. A common mistake is to read a large T32 as a sign of many trainees, when it may fund fewer, more senior postdocs. The only reliable slot count is in the program's own materials or the notice of award.
Which NIH Institutes Fund T32 Grants
NIGMS funded 418 of the 1,705 FY2026 T32 awards, 25%, up from 394 in FY2022, according to NIH RePORTER data pulled November 2, 2026.
| Institute | FY2022 | FY2023 | FY2024 | FY2025 | FY2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIGMS | 394 | 400 | 390 | 406 | 418 | +24 |
| NHLBI | 200 | 199 | 200 | 194 | 186 | -14 |
| NCI | 165 | 173 | 171 | 154 | 164 | -1 |
| NIAID | 178 | 163 | 148 | 132 | 131 | -47 |
| NIDDK | 159 | 143 | 127 | 115 | 103 | -56 |
| NIMH | 90 | 88 | 88 | 82 | 87 | -3 |
| NIA | 84 | 85 | 87 | 81 | 82 | -2 |
| NICHD | 84 | 84 | 82 | 75 | 80 | -4 |
| NINDS | 74 | 80 | 81 | 77 | 76 | +2 |
| NCATS | 0 | 12 | 27 | 34 | 51 | +51 |
The biggest drop was NIDDK, down 56 awards, or 35%, in 4 years. NIAID fell by 47. A program aimed at either institute should talk to its training officer before assuming the old pace of T32 funding still holds.
NCATS is the fastest grower. It had no T32 records in FY2022 and 51 in FY2026, and 50 of those 51 have "translational" or "CTSA" in the project title. For example, the FY2026 new awards include CTSA predoctoral and postdoctoral T32s under PAR-25-194 and PAR-25-195.
NIGMS is also changing how it runs its predoctoral programs. According to NOT-GM-26-007 (opens in a new tab), released July 29, 2026, competing NIGMS predoctoral basic biomedical applications will go through the parent T32 starting with the January 25, 2027 due date, the program areas shrink from 12 to 8, and each institution can hold at most 1 award per program area. NIGMS will also move postdoctoral clinician scientist support from the parent T32 to the parent K12. Its Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) has no planned changes.
Which Notices New T32s Came Through In FY2026
The parent T32 produced 53 of the 113 new FY2026 T32 awards, 47%, according to NIH RePORTER data pulled November 2, 2026. Grantsights checked each new award's opportunity number against its NIH notice:
| Notice | What it covers | New FY2026 T32s |
|---|---|---|
| PA-25-168 | Parent T32, most institutes | 53 |
| PAR-23-228 | NIGMS predoctoral basic biomedical (expired September 26, 2026) | 30 |
| PAR-25-194 and PAR-25-195 | NCATS CTSA predoctoral and postdoctoral T32s | 15 |
| PAR-24-128 | NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) | 7 |
| 5 other notices | Institute-specific programs and the expired PA-23-048 | 8 |
For a new program outside the NIGMS predoctoral areas, the parent T32 is the best bet: it's open to most institutes, it has three due dates a year, and it produced nearly half of all new awards. From January 25, 2027, it also takes the NIGMS predoctoral applications that PAR-23-228 used to handle, so expect more applications competing under one notice.
Top States And Schools For T32 Grants
California held 227 FY2026 T32 awards, worth $96.2 million, far ahead of New York with 154, according to the Grantsights pull of NIH RePORTER on November 2, 2026.

| 2 | New York | 154 | $57.4M |
| 3 | Pennsylvania | 132 | $54.1M |
| 4 | Massachusetts | 131 | $60.3M |
| 5 | North Carolina | 91 | $33.2M |
| 6 | Texas | 81 | $28.3M |
| Rank | Institution | T32 awards, FY2026 | FY2026 T32 dollars | New T32s, FY2022 to FY2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Johns Hopkins University | 57 | $26.6M | 10 |
| 2 | University of Michigan | 55 | $22.9M | 16 |
| 3 | University of Pennsylvania | 53 | $24.9M | 10 |

| 6 | UNC Chapel Hill | 46 | $18.0M | 10 |
| 7 | Columbia University Health Sciences | 44 | $17.2M | 13 |
| 8 | Washington University in St. Louis | 40 | $17.0M | 8 |
| 9 | Yale University | 38 | $18.3M | 10 |
| 9 | Stanford University | 38 | $17.3M | 10 |
T32s are broader than research grants in one way and narrower in another. The 1,705 FY2026 awards went to 224 organizations in 45 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, so almost every state has at least 1. But the top 10 schools held 468 of them, 27%, and 78 organizations held exactly 1.
New programs are spread more widely. The 113 new FY2026 T32s went to 80 organizations in 36 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, and the University of Pittsburgh led with 6. Specifically, the largest new FY2026 award went to the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus through NIGMS, at $1,606,114, followed by UC Merced at $896,386.
What NIH RePORTER Doesn't Tell You About T32 Grants
NIH RePORTER lists 1,705 FY2026 T32 awards, but at least 4 things a program director needs are missing from those records.
| Public source | Shows for T32s | Leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| NIH RePORTER (opens in a new tab) | Funded programs, institutes, schools, amounts, notice numbers | Number of trainee slots, trainee names, outcomes |
| NIH T32 activity code page (opens in a new tab) | Which notices use the T32 code | Which institutes are funding new T32s this year |
| PA-25-168 (opens in a new tab) | Eligibility, due dates, budget rules | How many positions a program will get |
| NOT-OD-26-044 (opens in a new tab) | FY2026 stipend, tuition and expense rates | What a given program actually pays |
The slot count is the first and biggest gap. NIH awards positions, but RePORTER only shows money, so it can't tell you how many trainees a program supports. According to PA-25-168, "the number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations," and applicants have to justify the positions they request.
Success rates are the second gap. RePORTER lists awards, not applications, so these counts can't be turned into a T32 success rate.
The third gap is trainee eligibility. According to PA-25-168, trainees must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or lawful permanent residents at appointment, and funded programs "may not use the race, ethnicity, or sex of a trainee" as an eligibility or selection criterion. Nothing in RePORTER shows who was appointed.
The fourth gap is the move between notices. Most FY2026 records still sit under older notices: 525 under PA-20-142 and 388 under PA-23-048. PA-23-048 (opens in a new tab) expired January 8, 2025, when PA-25-168 replaced it, and the NIGMS predoctoral notice PAR-23-228 (opens in a new tab) expired September 26, 2026. Programs renewing in 2027 should check which notice now applies.
Apply, Renew, Or Pick Another Route: 4 Checks
The next parent T32 due date is January 25, 2027, followed by May 25, 2027, according to PA-25-168 (opens in a new tab), posted November 15, 2024 and expiring May 5, 2028.
| Check | Apply signal | Different route or wait |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Institute | Your institute funded new T32s in FY2025 or FY2026 | Its T32 count is falling fast (NIDDK, NIAID); call first |
| 2. Notice | Parent T32 or an open institute notice covers your field | Your old notice expired with no successor; ask program staff |
| 3. Trainee pool | Enough eligible U.S. citizen or permanent resident trainees | Pool is mostly ineligible; look at institutional funding |
| 4. Track record | Renewal with trainee outcomes to show | New program with no record; start small |
The red flag is check 1. A program director who plans around a 5-year-old pace of awards at NIDDK or NIAID will likely underestimate the competition for fewer awards. For NIGMS predoctoral programs, the January 25, 2027 date is the first under the parent T32, so the NIGMS program areas and the 1-award-per-area limit apply.
For trainees looking for their own funding, the NIH F31 award history and NIH F32 award history show the individual fellowship side. For the step after a postdoc, see the NIH K99/R00 award history.
3 Takeaways From 8,758 T32 Records
According to NIH RePORTER data pulled November 2, 2026, there were 8,758 T32 records from FY2022 through FY2026, and the yearly count fell from a high of 1,809 to 1,705.
First, the T32 is shrinking slowly but its renewals are strong. Competing renewals rose from 189 in FY2022 to 274 in FY2026, while new programs held between 108 and 136 a year.
Second, institute mix is shifting. NIGMS and NCATS grew, while NIDDK and NIAID cut 103 awards between them.
Third, the dollars don't tell you the size. A $344,033 award could fund about 6 or 7 predoctoral trainees or about 4 postdocs, so read slot counts from the program, not from RePORTER.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many NIH T32 training grants are there?
NIH RePORTER showed 1,705 T32 awards with FY2026 funding when Grantsights pulled it on November 2, 2026, worth $666.0 million, at 224 organizations. That's down from 1,809 in FY2023. RePORTER can still add late FY2026 records.
How many new T32 awards did NIH make in FY2026?
113 new (type 1) T32 awards and 274 competing renewals (type 2), for 387 competing awards in all. That's the most competing T32 awards in any year from FY2022 to FY2026, mainly because renewals rose from 189 in FY2022.
How much is a typical NIH T32 award?
The median FY2026 T32 award was $344,033 in total costs for the year, and the middle half ran from $228,719 to $472,671. New awards were smaller, with a $284,006 median, while renewals had a $398,173 median. The amount mostly reflects how many trainees a program supports.
Does RePORTER show how many trainee slots a T32 has?
No. RePORTER shows the dollar amount, not the number of appointed trainees or slots. Stipends, tuition, training-related expenses and an 8% indirect rate all go into the total, so you can only estimate slots from the dollars.
Which NIH institute funds the most T32 grants?
NIGMS, with 418 of the 1,705 FY2026 T32 awards, about 25%. NHLBI followed with 186, NCI with 164, and NIAID with 131. NIDDK fell from 159 in FY2022 to 103 in FY2026.
When are NIH T32 applications due?
The parent T32, PA-25-168, uses January 25, May 25, and September 25 and expires May 5, 2028. NIGMS says its predoctoral basic biomedical programs move to the parent T32 starting with the January 25, 2027 due date.
