Utah Small Business Grants 2026: What's Open Now
Quick Answer: Utah has no general grant for opening or running a small business, and the SBA doesn't give one.
Full answer and how we checked it
What's open or coming up as of October 18, 2026: Go Utah's REDI rural hiring grant (up to $6,000 per job, next window November 1 to 15), Nucleus Grow's UTIF microgrant ($3,000 to $5,000 for first-time SBIR applicants) and UDAF grazing cost-share grants for ranchers (due December 31). The $200,000 Economic Assistance Grant reopens next year. Most Utah owners will do better with USBCI loans, the Utah Microloan Fund, MoFi and free Utah SBDC consulting.
Data note: Program terms come from the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity (Go Utah), Nucleus Grow, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, U.S. Treasury and SBA pages, checked October 18, 2026. Federal award figures come from the USAspending.gov API for fiscal year 2025. Go Utah grants open in short windows, so confirm the dates before you plan around one.

Utah small business grants open or recurring in 2026
Grantsights checked 13 Utah program pages on October 18, 2026. Four grants open to for-profit businesses were taking applications or had a set next window. Each one comes with a condition that most Wasatch Front shops can't meet, such as a rural location, an SBIR proposal or livestock.
| Utah grant | Who runs it | Amount | Who qualifies | Status | Deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rural Employment Development Incentive (REDI) | Go Utah, Center for Rural Development | Up to $6,000 per new position; up to $250,000 per business per year | Businesses creating full-time jobs in rural counties, or in towns of 10,000 or fewer in Weber, Davis and Utah counties, paying 100%+ of county average wage; no construction, retail, staffing or utilities | Next window set (quarterly) | November 1 to 15, 2026; approval required before hiring | Go Utah REDI page (opens in a new tab) |
| UTIF Microgrant | Nucleus Grow (formerly Utah Innovation Center), state-sponsored | $3,000; $5,000 for rural businesses; one per company | Utah for-profit companies new to SBIR/STTR (no award in 5 years) working with Nucleus Grow on a Phase I proposal of $125,000+ | Rolling, first come, first served until funds run out | Apply 4 weeks before your SBIR/STTR deadline | Nucleus Grow UTIF (opens in a new tab) |
| Grazing Improvement Program Grant and Small Livestock Operation Grant | Utah Department of Agriculture and Food | Cost-share, set per project | Livestock operations grazing cattle, sheep, goats or horses; the small-operation grant is for 20 to 75 animal units | Open | December 31, 2026 | UDAF grazing page (opens in a new tab) |
| Economic Assistance Grant (EAG) | Go Utah | Up to $200,000 | Utah businesses and associations with projects tied to the state's 5 targeted industries, finished within 18 months | Next round expected (annual) | 2026 window closed September 30, 2026 | Go Utah EAG page (opens in a new tab) |
Left out: the Utah Manufacturing Modernization Grant (Go Utah lists it under closed programs with an opening date of "TBD"), the Air and Water Innovation Grant (funding spent), the Rural Communities Opportunity Grant and Rural County Grant (for local governments, not businesses), and the Tourism Cooperative Marketing Grant (for destinations, nonprofits and municipalities, next round March 2027). The Enterprise Zone Tax Credit is ongoing for rural businesses but it's a credit, not a grant.

Loans, credits and free help in Utah (not grants)
Utah received $69.0 million in State Small Business Credit Initiative capital, according to Treasury's SSBCI program summaries (opens in a new tab), and Go Utah runs it as the Utah Small Business Credit Initiative (USBCI). All of it is loan support through lenders, not grants.
| Utah loan, credit or help option | Who runs it | Amount | Who qualifies | Status | Deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loan: USBCI Loan Participation Program (SSBCI) | Go Utah with partner banks and economic development organizations | State buys up to 40% of a loan at a 0.5% to 3% rate, lowering your blended rate; loans of $10,000 to $20 million | Businesses with fewer than 750 employees and a collateralized loan from a partner lender; no refinancing | Ongoing | None | Go Utah USBCI (opens in a new tab) |
| Loan: USBCI Capital Access Program (SSBCI) | Go Utah with participating lenders, including MoFi and the Utah Microloan Fund | Loss reserve on loans of $25,000 to $250,000 | Borrowers who fall just short of bank standards | Ongoing | None | Go Utah USBCI (opens in a new tab) |
| Loan: SBA Microloans | Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund | Up to $50,000 | Utah small businesses, including owners with credit challenges or a short history | Ongoing | None | SBA microlender list (opens in a new tab) |
| Loan: CDFIs | Utah Microloan Fund; MoFi | Set by each lender | Owners banks and credit unions turn down | Ongoing | None | Utah Microloan Fund (opens in a new tab), MoFi (opens in a new tab) |
| Loan: UTIF Nonrecourse Loan | Nucleus Grow | Up to $50,000 ($60,000 rural); up to 2 per company | SBIR/STTR Phase I winners submitting a Phase II proposal | Rolling, first come, first served | Apply 4 weeks before the Phase II deadline | Nucleus Grow UTIF (opens in a new tab) |
| Credit: Enterprise Zone Tax Credit | Go Utah | State income tax credits | Businesses in designated rural enterprise zones | Ongoing | None | Go Utah enterprise zones (opens in a new tab) |
| Help: Utah SBDC | Network of service centers led by Utah State University | Free consulting, training and resources | Any Utah small business or would-be owner | Ongoing | None | Utah SBDC (opens in a new tab) |
One detail to watch: Treasury's summary, last updated in January 2025, says the participation program buys up to 50% of a loan, while Go Utah's current USBCI page says up to 40%. Go by the state's page and confirm with your lender.
Which federal grants actually reached Utah small businesses (FY2025)
Utah's federal small-business grants are spread across many research firms rather than concentrated in one. Grantsights analysis of USAspending.gov FY2025 grant awards to small-business recipients in Utah counted $18.2 million in net obligations on 99 award records from October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025, pulled from the public USAspending.gov API (opens in a new tab) with grant award types 02 to 05, the "small business" recipient type and a Utah recipient location.
| Assistance Listing funding Utah small firms | FY2025 obligations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders Research, NIH (93.853) | $3,714,409 | 20% |
| Office of Science Financial Assistance, DOE (81.049) | $3,432,710 | 19% |
| NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (47.084) | $3,379,974 | 19% |
| Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research, NIH (93.855) | $2,858,433 | 16% |
| Vision Research, NIH (93.867) | $1,239,935 | 7% |
| Environmental Health, NIEHS (93.113) | $1,020,000 | 6% |
| Child Health and Human Development Research, NIH (93.865) | $854,660 | 5% |
| Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Research, NIH (93.846) | $696,820 | 4% |
According to USAspending recipient totals, no single company took more than 16% of the money, and the top five recipients held 48%. That's a healthier spread than most states show: 25 small-business recipients ended the year with net positive obligations. HHS obligated $10.7 million, DOE $3.4 million and NSF $3.4 million. Smaller lines came from Education ($327,812), Interior's Upper Colorado endangered fish recovery program ($201,669), USDA's SBIR program ($181,500) and an SBA Veterans Outreach Program award ($75,000).
The pattern is clear: nearly all of this is SBIR and STTR research money, mostly from NIH, DOE and NSF, and Utah's medical device and software companies are well placed for it. For a retail, restaurant or trades business, none of these programs is a fit; skip the federal search and use the Grantsights grant database for state and local options. For a research company, the SBIR Phase 1 grant guide explains how the first award is scored, and Nucleus Grow offers coaching, proposal review and topic matching for Utah companies.
Limits: recipient type is self-reported in SAM.gov, so the totals can miss firms or include some that have outgrown the size standard. Figures are FY2025 obligations net of de-obligations, not payments.
How Utah's open grants work
Each of the 4 grants has a timing rule that disqualifies applicants who act too early or too late.
REDI: approval before the hire
REDI pays up to $6,000 for each new full-time position, depending on the employee's work location and rural residency. Jobs can be remote or in a satellite office, as long as they're tied to an eligible rural location, and they must last at least 12 consecutive months at 100% or more of the county's average wage. The application opens quarterly for about two weeks, one month after each calendar quarter: the 2026 windows were February 1-15, May 1-15, August 1-15 and November 1-15. The most common mistake is hiring first; Go Utah requires approval before you create the positions.
UTIF microgrant: help writing your first SBIR
The microgrant offsets the staff time of writing a federal SBIR or STTR proposal, which Nucleus Grow estimates can take upwards of 200 hours. You must be new to the program (no SBIR or STTR award in the last five years), work with Nucleus Grow on the Phase I proposal, submit to the agency at least one day before the deadline and pass its administrative review. The grant is paid after submission. Rural status, worth an extra $2,000, requires a SAM registration address outside Davis, Salt Lake, Utah and Weber counties. One company in Utah, a Salt Lake City molecular diagnostics firm, won a Direct to Phase II SBIR grant from NIH's child health institute, per a September 2026 Nucleus Institute announcement; that's the kind of path UTIF is designed to start.
Grazing Improvement Program
UDAF's grazing grants share the cost of water developments, fencing and vegetation treatments for livestock producers grazing cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The Small Livestock Operation Grant is a separate track for 20 to 75 animal units (at least 20 cows, 100 sheep or 130 goats). Both close December 31, 2026. UDAF's separate predator control grant closes October 31, 2026.
Economic Assistance Grant
The EAG funds up to $200,000 for Utah businesses and associations whose projects support industry, education, community development or infrastructure tied to the 5 targeted industries. Go Utah prioritizes clear success metrics, matching funds and projects finished within 18 months. The 2026 window ran September 15 to 30, so plan for next year's round.
Utah grant amounts: realistic expectations
The 4 grants range from a $3,000 microgrant to a $200,000 project grant, and the realistic amount depends on how many of the rules you meet. Based on our review of each program's posted limits:
| Utah program | Top award posted | Main limit in practice | When the money arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| REDI | $6,000 per job; $250,000 per year | Number of qualifying rural jobs at 100%+ of county wage | After the job exists for the required period |
| UTIF Microgrant | $3,000 ($5,000 rural) | One per company | After your SBIR/STTR submission |
| Grazing Improvement Program | Cost-share set per project | Your share of project costs | Per UDAF's grant agreement |
| Economic Assistance Grant | $200,000 | Ties to targeted industries and matching funds | Per grant agreement, annual window |
A rural employer adding 5 qualifying jobs could expect up to $30,000 from REDI, which is worth it but won't cover a payroll. The honest answer for most Wasatch Front businesses: USBCI's lower blended loan rate is worth more than any grant on this list, and it's your best bet if you need capital this year.
Utah options by type of business
Here's how the grants and loans line up by business type:
- Retail shop, restaurant or contractor. REDI excludes retail and construction, and SBIR doesn't apply. Use a USBCI-backed loan, the Utah Microloan Fund, MoFi or an SBA microloan.
- Rural employer in tech, manufacturing or services. REDI is the best fit; add the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit if you're in a designated zone.
- Tech startup. UTIF and Nucleus Grow's free proposal help, then a federal SBIR or STTR award.
- Rancher or farm business. UDAF grazing grants, and USDA's Value-Added Producer Grants (opens in a new tab) if you process your own product (1:1 match).
Owners near state lines often compare options next door. The Colorado small business grants guide covers programs for firms on the Western Slope side, and the Arizona small business grants guide covers southern neighbors. For nonprofit, tribal and local government funding, see the Utah grants guide.
What Go Utah's economic development site doesn't tell you
Go Utah's Grants and Funding page lists 11 grants and zones, but most are for local governments, hotels, tourism partners or housing developers, and the page doesn't sort them by who can apply.
Short windows are easy to miss. REDI opens for about two weeks a quarter, and the EAG was open for about two weeks in September. Check Go Utah's Grants Calendar every quarter, or you'll find out after a window closes.
Approval comes before the hire. REDI won't pay for positions you created before Go Utah approved your application, and the job must survive 12 months. If you're hiring now, apply in the next window and time your start dates after approval.
Retail and construction are excluded. REDI rules out businesses primarily engaged in construction, retail, staffing or public utilities, which covers a large share of rural employers.
USBCI is a lower rate, not a grant. The participation program blends a state rate of 0.5% to 3% with your bank's rate, and it doesn't refinance existing debt. Ask your lender whether it's a USBCI partner before you apply.
Red flag: paid grant matching services. The SBA's grants page (opens in a new tab) states that it doesn't give grants to start or expand a business, and the FTC's government grant scams page (opens in a new tab) warns not to pay up-front fees or buy grant lists. Go Utah grants cost nothing to apply for.
How to apply for a Utah small business grant
Most Utah grants take 4 steps:
- Check the window. Go Utah's grants calendar lists REDI and EAG dates; UTIF is rolling; UDAF posts its deadlines.
- Request portal access. New users of the Go Utah grant portal need login credentials, which take about a business day.
- Register in SAM. UTIF requires a current SAM.gov registration (opens in a new tab) as a Utah for-profit business, which also proves rural status.
- Keep records. REDI requires the job to last 12 months, and annual reporting periods apply to several Go Utah grants.
The small business grants by state hub compares Utah with other states. To find the federal, state and local programs that fit your business, run the free eligibility checker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there small business grants in Utah?
A few, and most target rural areas, technology companies or agriculture. When Grantsights checked Utah program pages on October 18, 2026, the Rural Employment Development Incentive (REDI) had its next application window set for November 1 to 15, 2026, paying up to $6,000 per new high-paying job in rural Utah. Nucleus Grow's UTIF microgrant pays $3,000 to $5,000 to first-time SBIR or STTR Phase I applicants, first come, first served. Livestock operations can apply for Grazing Improvement Program cost-share grants through December 31, 2026. The Economic Assistance Grant (up to $200,000) closed its 2026 window on September 30.
How do I get a small business grant in Utah?
Most Go Utah grants run through the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity grant portal, and new users need to request login credentials, which takes about a business day. For REDI, apply during a quarterly window and get approval before you create the new positions. For the UTIF microgrant, apply through the same portal four weeks before your SBIR or STTR deadline and work with Nucleus Grow on the proposal. For help choosing, the Utah SBDC offers free consulting statewide.
Are there startup grants in Utah?
Only small ones for technology startups. The UTIF microgrant pays $3,000 ($5,000 for rural companies) to Utah firms new to SBIR or STTR, to offset the staff time of writing a federal proposal, and Phase I winners can get a nonrecourse loan of up to $50,000 ($60,000 rural) while they apply for Phase II. The real startup grant is the federal SBIR or STTR award itself. Other startups use USBCI-backed loans, the Utah Microloan Fund, or the state-backed Nucleus Fund for equity.
Does Utah have grants for women- or minority-owned businesses?
Grantsights couldn't confirm a state cash grant reserved for women- or minority-owned businesses that's open now. Utah's USBCI loan program says it deploys at least 29% of funds to women-owned businesses, rural enterprises and people facing geographic, cultural or economic barriers, and its loan participation program partners with the Inspire in Utah campaign for underserved owners. The Utah Microloan Fund lends to owners with credit challenges, limited collateral or a short history.
What is Utah's REDI grant?
The Rural Employment Development Incentive is a Go Utah grant of up to $6,000 per new full-time position in a rural county, or in a city or town of 10,000 or fewer people in Weber, Davis or Utah County. The job must last at least 12 months and pay at least 100% of the county's average wage, and businesses mainly in construction, retail, staffing or public utilities don't qualify. A business can receive up to $250,000 a year, and it must be approved before it creates the jobs. The 2026 windows were February 1-15, May 1-15, August 1-15 and November 1-15.
Does the SBA give small business grants in Utah?
No. The SBA says it doesn't provide grants for starting or expanding a business. In Utah, SBA support comes as guaranteed loans, microloans of up to $50,000 through the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund, and free consulting and training through the Utah SBDC network.
