Source: grants private foundations reported on IRS Form 990-PF (tax years 2019 to 2024, mostly 2023), counted October 19, 2026. A grant counts when the recipient's name says church, parish, ministry or congregation, or the stated purpose names a church. States are the recipient's address on the filing. A foundation that gave in several states counts once in each state and once in the national total. Another 450 grants ($143.5 million) had no US state on the filing and aren't in the table.
What the counts can and can't tell you
- Most church grants are small: the median is $5,000, and it's $5,000 or less in 47 of the 50 states and DC.
- "Gave to 3+ churches" counts foundations that funded at least three different congregations in the state. Those are the funders most likely to consider a church they don't already know.
- Private foundations only. Community foundations, denominational funds and donor-advised funds don't file 990-PF, so their grants aren't counted.
- The table names no foundations. The church funder list names every foundation in a state with its grants.
